Windsor Lions’ biggest fundraiser of the Club’s annual calendar, the Horseride in the Great Park, lived up to, and even exceeded, all expectations last weekend in Windsor Great Park when almost 700 riders successfully completed the 9 mile course in the glorious surroundings of the Great Park. Whilst the final figures are not yet to hand, it is anticipated that up to £40,000 was raised for local charities and good causes.
Event organizer Lion Mark Fraser enthused: “What a wonderful event we have just had – so much fun enjoyed by so many! The weather behaved itself reasonably well too – apart from a huge thunderstorm at the end of Saturday and a nasty drizzle at the end of Sunday. The Great Park looked spectacular and all our riders and their horses had the most glorious time. The feedback we have had from them is amazing. And as for the amount of money raised – we estimate £35-40,000 from what was our 41st event.” This year, the Horseride was in huge demand with entries closing two months before the event. Dozens of ‘hopefuls’ were added to a Reserve List with many more requesting early notification of the 2018 Horseride in order they don’t miss out next year.
Lion Mark summed up: “We now have the enjoyable task of determining the charities and good causes that will benefit from this year’s ride. We are keen to spread the funds across a wide range of local organisations as well as retaining funds for the support of local people and projects that come to our attention during the calendar year. The beneficiaries, as well as the riders who have had a particularly successful event, will all be announced at our Awards evening which I expect to be held in January next year. And of course, none of our success would have been possible without the goodwill and support of Windsor Great Park and The Shanly Foundation for sponsoring the event. We are indeed very thankful to both organisations.”
