– Record numbers turnout for lots of fun
Windsor Lions’ Funfest, the fun event for disabled children and their families, reached new heights last Sunday afternoon at Windsor Leisure Centre and was deemed by all those who attended ‘a roaring success – the best yet’!
Almost 300 people attended – a 50% increase on last year – representing a large number of different charities, including a number of special schools, from all over London and the Home Counties for what was Windsor Lions’ fourth Funfest. Mums, Dads, siblings, carers with a total of 180 disabled children arrived on the day and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of spectacular recreational activities.
The afternoon consisted of a session in the main halls of Windsor Leisure Centre where a range of fun events were laid out. These included Human Table football, a Ten Pin Skittles Alley, an Obstacle Course, Bouncy Castles, as well as a new, very popular activity, Bungee Run. The Leisure Centre Main Hall was packed all afternoon as the youngsters absorbed the wide range of activities, laughing and squealing with delight. The second session focused on the Leisure Pool, probably the most popular part of the day. As the Pool doors were opened, the excited children swarmed into the Pool area where they had couple of hours of dedicated play time.
The event was sponsored by the estate agent Savills of Windsor. Members of their staff handed out bright yellow balloons to all the children as they left which added to the great fun atmosphere. Also new this year was a free “grand draw” – each family was given a draw ticket on arrival and 6 lucky winners of 4 x tickets to a day out in Paultons Park theme park, Hampshire were pulled out of the hat during the afternoon.
The event was attended by the Deputy Mayor of The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Councillor John Lenton and the Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Margaret Lenton, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves saying they were delighted with their visit.
Windsor Lions’ President, Lion Dave Voyce, commented: “What a great time we all had! From small beginnings, the Funfest has gained huge additional support with a great number of families attending from a very wide area of the South East and all thoroughly enjoying themselves. The sheer delight on the faces of so many youngsters was a real picture. That’s all our Club wanted – to ensure we delivered a great fun event for as many youngsters as possible and we did just that! We are very grateful to our event sponsors, Savills of Windsor, and of course to the Leisure Centre management for their wonderful support. Roll on next year – we will hope for even more to enjoy!”
