Bigger and better than ever before – over 140 elderly folk royally entertained
Windsor Lions held its annual ‘Silver Lunch’ for the elderly last Sunday (19th February) when over 140 Windsor and district based residents were suitably wined, dined and entertained by a wonderful mix of music and song. Fondly known by the Club as the ‘Silver Party’, guests were transported to and from the venue, once again at SportsAble, the disability sports club in Maidenhead, to what was a truly lovely event, full of colour and gaiety.
A two course lunch, followed by coffee, was prepared by the Windsor Lions team, led by the Club’s own ‘chef de cuisine’ Lion Graham Alston, and served by members of Windsor Lions, their families and friends. The event had an Old Time Music Hall theme with full blooded sing-song led by the renowned key board and song artist Phil Phillips who has in the past accompanied world-famous stars of entertainment including Bruce Forsythe. And new entertainers were The Friends of Langley Park Handbell Ringers who cleverly played both classical and contemporary tunes – certainly a lovely novelty not previously experienced at the event.
The Mayor and Mayor’s Escort, Cllr Sayonara Buxton and her husband Ian Buxton, were in attendance which added an extra sparkle to the event. Lion President Dave Voyce thanked the entertainers, event organiser Lion Diane Purchase and all Club members and friends for their work staging the party with a special tribute to those ‘regulars’ who could not be with us this year. Proceedings were rounded off in the traditional manner with a rousing chorus of “We’ll Meet Again”! And we certainly hope so – same time, same place, next year!
Lion Diane Purchase, concluded: “It is probably one of the Club’s most worthwhile events of the annual calendar – it is so much fun and bonhomie our members love doing it and of course our guests have a whale of a time. A great venue, a lovely lunch, plenty of wine and superb entertainment – how could it possibly fail?!”
