“Diabetes – Know Your Risk” headlines the Windsor awareness campaign
The Windsor Lions, the leading local community service organisation, is launching an awareness campaign in Windsor of the risks associated with diabetes, a growing scourge in our society.
Working with Diabetes UK, the Club is holding an event in Windsor on Friday and Saturday 16th & 17th June to promote ‘Diabetes Week’ which runs from Sunday 11th June through all of that week. Members of Windsor Lions will man a campaign stall in Peascod Street outside Boots and encourage members of the public to enter the store and participate in a survey-based ‘assessment process’ undertaken by Boots’ trained staff to understand their risk of contracting diabetes.
Diabetes is a serious condition but the risks associated with it are not fully appreciated by most people. It can make an individual go blind, cause a stroke or kidney failure, trigger a heart attack, lead to amputations or even kill. The risk of contracting diabetes increases with age and if there is a history of diabetes in the family then the condition is two to six times more likely. An overweight condition can also increase the risk. Right now, there are 3.9 million people living with diabetes in the UK including 549,000 people who have Type 2 diabetes (but don’t realise it), a form of the condition which usually gets worse. Without urgent action, and greater public awareness, the number of people with diabetes in the UK is forecast by Diabetes UK to rise to 5 million by 2025. However, early intervention and life style changes can prevent or delay diabetes, in fact Diabetes UK say that 3 out of 5 cases of Type 2 can be delayed or prevented – but the first step towards this is identifying those most at risk.
Health related awareness campaigns are not new territory for Windsor Lions. In the recent past the Club has run two very successful Prostate Cancer awareness campaigns in Windsor which have directly benefitted hundreds of ‘at risk’ males and, according to the medical experts, saved the lives of several of them by early medical attention which resulted.
Lion Lindsay MacGregor, Windsor Lions campaign manager commented: “We are delighted to be working with Diabetes UK to drive forward this “Diabetes – Know Your Risk” campaign. Early diagnosis of diabetes followed by appropriate treatment is vital to the long-term health of the patient and if we can help to ‘spread the word’ through Windsor then we will have achieved our aim.”
